Ripon Going Analysis 5F & 6F
To sort out the draw advantages in Ripon 5F and 6F sprints we need to take a
more detailed look at the going
Normally, throughout this web site, results are presented showing good or
better going in black, and softer than good in red.
In order to get more out of Ripon sprints, the analysis below looks at race
results on good or better going only.
On this web page, results of races on going that was
faster than good are shown in normal black type
:- good/good-firm in places, good-firm/good in places, good to firm and good to
firm/firm.
The results shown
in red are for races on good
going.
There are no results on the 2 charts below showing races
contested on going softer than good ( good - good to soft in places or softer
going ).
By looking at results in this way, we can see what effect different types of
FASTER going have had on results.
During the last 9 years, the going at Ripon has never been described as
faster that good to firm/firm in places.
The basic result of the analysis
shown below :-
on going faster
than good, in medium sized fields of 10
to 18 runners, most races were won by horses drawn in stalls 1 to 6.
On going faster than good, crossing to the High side of the course may
have only been advantageous on a regular basis in big fields of more than 20
runners in 6F races.
On the slightly slower good going, horses
drawn high have been more successful.
Past results show that these races have not favoured a small section of the stalls in
the long term, either High or Low, so races on good or slower going are likely
to prove less predictable than
races on really fast going.
Although races with as few as 9 runners split (e.g. May 26th 2005) when jockeys break away from the main bunch in search of faster ground towards the High rail, not all races with plenty of runners have split.
To make best use of the draw in Ripon sprints, it may be best to wait for going that is faster than good, and follow horses drawn Low, but avoid races with large numbers of runners.

(the black results), the bottom half of the draw won 18 of 25 races 72%.
On going faster than good, stalls 1-6 won 17 of 25 races 68%
The difference between those 2 sets of figures is the result, winner
drawn 8 of 21 runners.
In races of 9 and 10 runners and 19 to 23 runners, results have favoured both
Low and High stalls, so to narrow things down further :-
Stalls Low. On going faster than good, in races of 11 to 18 runners,
stalls 1 to 6 won 10 of 11 races 91 %.
In races of 19 or more runners on Faster Than Good going, stalls 1 to 6 won
5 of 8 races.
On good going (results shown in red),
stalls 1-6 won 1 of 6 races, the Top 6 stalls won 3 of 6 races.
Note that on this type of going in races of 8 - 14 runners, all 3 races
were won from the Top 5 stalls, but in races of 15 or more, 2 of 3 races were
won from the Bottom half of the draw.
2006 results :- 2-14 (Good-firm), 3-20 (Good/good-firm)
2005 results :- 7 of 9, 5 - 14. Both races took place on going faster than good.

There is an obvious spread of results in races of 20 runners, and possibly the
start of a spread in races of 23 runners.
In races of 21 to 23 runners, the Top 6 stalls won 7 of 10 races 70%, but 10
races is a very small sample.
